☂️ Local tip: Istanbullites sometimes call these “Şemsiyeli Sokak,” which literally translates to Umbrella Street. It’s not an official street name in Istanbul, just a descriptive phrase.

Karaköy Umbrella Street

This is the most popular umbrella street in Istanbul — and definitely the easiest to find as well!

It’s located on the main street of Karaköy, a fun and lively neighborhood full of third-wave coffee shops, trendy restaurants, industrial bars, murals, and cute boutique shops. In a nutshell, this whole area has that cool, urban-creative vibe Istanbul does so well.

Karaköy is one of those places where you come for just a few photos and end up staying for brunch, award-winning coffee, vintage shopping, and a sunset walk along the waterfront.

Interested in visiting? We’ve got an entire Karaköy travel guide here — it’s packed with local finds, secret streets, and our favorite cafes. (Fair warning: you’ll definitely want to add a few extra hours to your Beyoğlu itinerary after reading it! 😉)

Best of all, this umbrella street is super easy to reach. If you’re staying in Beyoğlu, it’s basically a straight walk down the hillside. If you’re coming from Sultanahmet (the Old Town), you can hop on the T1 tram line and get off at either Karaköy or Tophane station.

Karaköy Umbrella Street #2

Did you know that just a 5-minute walk from the iconic Karaköy umbrella street is another (albeit smaller) umbrella street as well? 😁

Located in a short side alley behind Karaköy Pier, it’s covered with a ceiling of rainbow umbrellas, fairy lights, and hanging vines that turn the whole place into a little pocket of color. You can also pose with the butterfly wing graffiti on the wall as well!

Balat Umbrella Street

It’s no secret that Balat is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in the city, so naturally, its umbrella street is every bit as vibrant as you’d expect.

Personally, we think that this is the most colorful umbrella street in Istanbul, especially on a sunny day when all the umbrellas light up and cast rainbow-like shadows on the ground.

It’s a corner where the colors feel extra vibrant, and everything around you looks like it was designed for a postcard.

It’s not just umbrellas, either! This spot has tons of other photo props like bright wooden huts, a retro VW Beetle car, a wall full of colorful pinwheels, and other Instagrammable decor. This is definitely one of the most popular family-friendly photo spots in Istanbul — and the most Instagrammable places in Balat as well. 😉

That being said, this place is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the entire photo zone is located in a private cafe, which means that the decorations are always in great shape. On the other hand, you’ll need to buy something to enter, and unfortunately the menu is overpriced and honestly not the tastiest (it definitely feels like a tourist trap).

If you do decide to visit, we recommend ordering a coffee or tea but eating lunch elsewhere.

Galata Umbrella Street

One of the most hidden umbrella streets in Istanbul is (ironically) just a short 4-minute walk from the iconic Galata Tower, which makes it all the more surprising how few people actually notice it. It’s tucked away in a quiet little alley — blink and you might miss it! 😉

While smaller and low-key, this umbrella alley in Istanbul is a great place to pause for a quick photo, especially if you’re already in the area.

The last time we were here, there was a little kiosk inside the alley selling freshly-squeezed juice and cut fruits (perfect for a cold drink on a hot day or a boost of vitamins in the winter!)

There are also a few tables under the umbrellas, so you can sit, sip, and snap a cute photo with your drink and the colorful canopy above. It’s also a nice little break if you want to escape the crowds around Galata Tower.

Istiklal Umbrella Street

This is our personal favorite umbella street in Istanbul because of its uniqueness — the umbrellas are all a cool teal color!

Even better, it’s also the closest umbrella street to Istiklal Caddesi! It’s on the street “behind” the Atlas Pasaj (Atlas Passage), so you can see two places in one go. 🙂

We recommend visiting in the morning or afternoon, as that’s when the street is quiet and there are almost no people. In the evening, the cafes and hookah restaurants tend to get very busy!

Kadıköy Umbrella Street

Istanbul’s Asian side also has its own umbrella street, and it’s no surprise that you’ll find it in cool, local, lively Kadıköy!

Kadıköy is one of the most must-visit neighborhoods in Istanbul, and we’re not just saying that because we live here (although we are proud Kadıköylüler 😁). It’s full of cool street art and murals, secondhand bookstores and antique stores, cocktail bars, creative restaurants, cute local cats, and just the right amount of personality.

You’ll find the Kadıköy umbrella street hidden in a quiet little alley just off the Bahariye Street, right near the nostalgic tram line and colorful bollards (which also doubles as some of the top Instagram spots on Istanbul’s Asian side!)

We especially love that the umbrellas here are different designs and not just the standard rainbow colored parasols, which makes it Istanbul’s most unique umbrella street. Even the houses along the alley are “dressed” for the occasion with their bold red, orange, and blue hues, which really tie the whole scene together. 🙂

BONUS: Kadıköy Hot Air Balloons Street

Okay, so this isn’t technically an umbrella street, but we’d argue that it’s even cooler! 😁

Instead of the usual colorful umbrellas you see everywhere, this hidden gem is uniquely Turkish: it’s a street full of hot air balloons “floating” above your head!

Best of all, it’s just a 3-minute walk from Kadikoy’s famous umbrella street (that we mentioned above), so you can visit both in one trip.

Local tip: We recommend coming here around sunset or after dark. The balloons light up in the evening and look absolutely gorgeous twinkling above the streetside restaurants and tavernas. 🙂
