Airports in Turkey: Info About ALL 50+ Airports & Travel Tips

Did you know that Türkiye is the 5th most visited country in the world? In 2023 alone, it welcomed over 55 million international tourists!

To accommodate the huge number of local and international tourists and make it easier to get from Point A to Point B, Turkey has invested heavily into its airport infrastructure.

As of 2024, there are 51 passenger airports in Türkiye, which includes both international and domestic-only airports.

You’ve probably heard of Istanbul Airport (the 7th busiest airport in the world!) and Antalya Airport, but there are dozens of smaller and unheard-of regional airports that make it even more convenient to get around Turkeyespecially if you’re going to far-off places like Gaziantep, Van, or Trabzon.

In fact, about half of the airports on this list only serve domestic flights!

If you’re planning a multi-city trip in Turkey, be sure to save this blog post for later — it has everything you need to know, including the full list of airports in Turkey (separated by region), the closest major cities, and tons of other helpful information.

❗️Travel Tip: We recommend reading our Guide to Domestic Flights in Türkiye blog post because it has everything you need to know about domestic Turkish airlines (which we’ll reference a lot in this post!), how to get to/from the airport, average prices, and practical travel tips. It’s an excellent companion to this blog post!

Here is a useful map that shows all the airports in Türkiye 🙂

To better organize this blog post, we’ll talk about the most popular international airports in Turkey first (since you’ll likely enter the country through one of these airports) and move onto the regional airports in the second section.

Istanbul Airport (IST)

Distance to center: 45 km (28 mi)

Without a doubt, the most important airport in Turkey is Istanbul Airport — it welcomed more than 76 million passengers in 2023 and is a major transit hub for intercontinental flights.

This is also thanks to the fact that IST Airport serves as the hub for Turkish Airlines, the national airline of Turkey. If you’ve seen the ads, you might have heard that Turkish Airlines is the “airline that flies to the most countries in the world” — as of June 2024, that includes 130+ countries!

But we digress. 🙂

If you’re flying to Istanbul, you’ll either arrive at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). We’ll talk about Sabiha Gökçen Airport below.

Istanbul Airport is located on the European side and is about 45 km (28 mi) to the city center. The airport has only one terminal, which is divided into 5 piers — four piers are for international travelers, and one pier is for domestic.

Istanbul Airport is served by more than one hundred airlines, including Aegean Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, KLM, LOT, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Turkish Airlines, and Wizz Air, among others.

If you’re traveling via Istanbul Airport, we recommend giving yourself plenty of time. The airport is absolutely massive, and we don’t say that lightly. It has a size of 76 sq. km (47 sq. mi) and can take quite a bit of time getting from one side to the other!

Speaking of which — if you’re flying with Turkish Airlines and have a layover in Istanbul Airport, you can also take advantage of their free layover program called Touristanbul! Your layover needs to be between 6 to 24 hours in order to take advantage of the free tour. There are currently seven tours that range from short (3 hours) to full-day tours (10 hours). İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)

Distance to center: 45 km (28 mi)

No surprise here: the second most-popular airport in Turkey is Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which is also located in Istanbul — albeit, on the Asian (Anadolu) side.

While Istanbul Airport (IST) is known as a major hub for international flights, Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is mostly known for its domestic flights and budget airlines.

SAW Airport is the hub of Pegasus Airlines, which is the biggest low-cost airline in Türkiye. If you’re planning to travel domestically in Türkiye, there’s a big chance that you’ll depart from Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

Although Sabiha Gökçen Airport is older than the recently-opened IST Airport (SAW was opened in 2001!), it has plenty of comfortable amenities and a few lounges. Best of all, you can travel from Kadikõy to SAW Airport in less than an hour. 🙂

Antalya Airport (AYT)

Distance to center: 14 km (9 mi)

Known as the ‘Gateway to the Mediterranean,’ Antalya Airport is a key hub for tourists visiting Turkey’s beautiful southern coast. In fact, the airport is so busy during the summer (it welcomed more than 35 million passengers in 2023!) that there are plans to open another airport in Kaş.

It offers easy access to the region’s stunning beaches and resorts, and is used as a base for tourists who want to travel to Antalya, Kemer, Kalkan, Kaş, Belek, Side, and Fethiye.

There are more than 100 flights to/from Antalya Airport, including popular European destinations (Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK) and the Middle East (Qatar, Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq, the UAE).

Since Antalya and the surrounding area are extremely popular destinations among Eastern European tourists, there are also dozens of seasonal and chartered flights to/from the region.

Ankara Airport (ESB)

Distance to center: 25 km (15.5 mi)

Ankara Esenboğa Airport serves as a hub for tourists and business travelers who want to visit Türkiye’s capital, Ankara. Thanks to recent developments and new partnerships over the last two years, Ankara Airport has been opening up tons of new flight routes to and from Europe.

The airport serves as a base for two low-cost carriers: Pegasus Airlines and AJet.

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)

Distance to center: 20 km (12 mi)

If Antalya is the Gateway to the Mediterranean, then Izmir is the ‘Gateway to the Aegean!’

Izmir Airport is the fifth busiest airport in Türkiye and is used by travelers who want to explore the Aegean region. There are dozens of popular places that travelers can visit after they fly into ADB airport, including Izmir, Ephesus (there’s a direct train from the airport!), Çeşme, Alaçatı, Kuşadası, and more.

Airports in Türkiye By Region

To make it easier to navigate, we’ve split all 50+ airports in Turkey by region. To quickly find what you’re looking for, take a look at the photo above (which illustrates all 7 regions of Turkey) and search for your selected region below.

❗️Note: The * next to the airport name means that the airport only serves domestic flights.

Airports in the MARMARA REGION

We’ll start with the Marmara region, which coincidentally gets the most tourists per year thanks to popular cities like Istanbul, Bursa, and Çanakkale.

Istanbul Airport (IST)
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (EDO)
Bursa Yenişehir Airport (YEI) *
Çanakkale Airport (CKZ) *
Tekirdağ Çorlu Airport (TEQ) *

We’ve talked about Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) above, so we’ll skip those two and continue down the list. 🙂

Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport is a great option if you want to travel to Ayvalık, one of the most beautiful little towns along the Aegean (click the link to read our blog post!)

Meanwhile, Bursa Yenişehir Airport is a small and modest airport that is a 55 km (34 mi) drive from its namesake, Bursa. Bursa was the first major capital of the Ottoman empire and is a popular destination all year ‘round, known for its ski resorts in the winter and lush green parks in the summer.

Bursa Airport currently serves flights from Diyarbakır, Erzurum, Muş, and Trabzon. It’s a good choice if you want to travel from eastern or northern Türkiye and make your way back to Istanbul.

Çanakkale Airport is a very convenient option if you want to travel to Çanakkale and Gallipoli (the famous WWI battle site), Troy (yes, that Troy with the giant horse 😀), and Bozcaada (a beautiful island). Best of all, Çanakkale Airport is located practically in Çanakkale, and is only a 5-minute taxi ride to the city center.

❗Note: If you type in ‘Çanakkale Airport’ in Google Maps, sometimes it’ll give you Gökçeada Airport (GKD), which is an airport located on the island of Gökçeada. While GKD is technically a functioning airport, it’s only used for chartered and private aircraft. Be careful and make sure you select the correct one.

Finally, Tekirdağ Çorlu Airport is a small domestic airport that only operates flights to and from Ankara. Tekirdağ is a quiet city that’s famous for its cuisine and harbor.

Airports in the AEGEAN REGION

If you’re looking for a fun and relaxing beach vacation, just fly into any of the first three airports mentioned below. 😉

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)
Dalaman Airport (DLM)
Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV)
Denizli Çardak Airport (DNZ) *
Kütahya Zafer Airport (KZR)

The most popular airport in the Turkish Aegean region is Izmir Airport, which we’ve covered above. Its location makes it extremely convenient to travel to places like Izmir (of course :)), the Çeşme Peninsula (including the charming towns of Çeşme and Alaçatı), Ephesus, Pergamon, Foça, Pamukkale, Ayvalık, Kuşadası, and more.

Further south, Milas-Bodrum Airport is a popular choice for tourists who want to relax in Bodrum, as it’s only 35 km (22 mi) from the city center. Milas-Bodrum Airport typically serves seasonal routes from all over Europe (Austria, France, Germany, Poland, the UK, etc.) and the Middle East (Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia). It also serves regular year-round flights from Istanbul (IST and SAW), Adana, and Ankara.

Dalaman Airport is also popular during the summer, as it’s close to top summer destinations like Dalaman, Dalyan, the Datça Peninsula, Fethiye, Kalkan, and Marmaris, among others.

Further inland, Denizli Çardak Airport is a small regional airport serving only domestic flights from Istanbul (both IST and SAW airports). It primarily functions as a gateway to Pamukkale, which is about 70 km (43 mi) from the airport.

Finally, Kütahya Zafer Airport is a small regional airport. Despite its size, it has seasonal flights to and from Düsseldorf (on Eurowings and SunExpress), as well as year round flights to Istanbul Airport (IST) via Turkish Airlines.

⭐️ Travel Tip: Planning to go island hopping between Türkiye and Greece ? You can easily get to a number of Greek islands if you fly into the following airports:

🧿 Izmir Airport — Travel to Çeşme and take the Çeşme to Chios ferry
🧿 Milas-Bodrum Airport — Travel to Bodrum and take the Bodrum to Kos ferry. (You can also visit on a day trip — click to read our One Day Itinerary!).
You can also travel to Didim and take the ferry to Kos or Agia Marina islands.
🧿 Dalaman Airport — Travel to Fethiye or Marmaris, both have ferries to Rhodes.

Airports in the MEDITERRANEAN REGION

Let’s continue our trip along Türkiye’s coast and check out the airports in the Mediterranean region!

Antalya Airport (AYT)
Çukurova International Airport (COV)
Gazipaşa Alanya Airport (GZP)
Hatay Airport (HTY) *
Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport (ISE) *
Kahramanmaraş Airport (KCM) *

If you’re visiting southwest Türkiye, there’s a pretty big chance that you’ll use Antalya or Alanya airport, as they offer the most international and domestic routes.

Antalya is the most popular airport in southwest Turkey (the others being Bodrum and Dalaman, mentioned above) and the third-busiest airport in the country. It is the gateway to the city of Antalya and beyond.

Unlike other airports in this region, Antalya Airport operates flights year round, including seasonal routes to/from Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia.

Alanya Airport (officially known as Gazipaşa–Alanya Airport) is also quite popular due to its close proximity to numerous all-inclusive resorts along the sea.

Meanwhile, Çukurova International Airport is the gateway to the southeast region, with more than 100+ weekly arrivals during the busy tourist season. No surprise there, as everyone wants to taste Adana’s famous spicy cuisine. 🙂
The airport has international flights to Germany, Belgium, Lebanon, the Netherlands, and the UK, as well as domestic flights to Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, and Trabzon, among others.

Çukurova International Airport is also a popular choice for travelers who want to visit Tarsus and Mersin.

Note: You might have seen Adana Şakirpaşa Airport (ADA) in travel guides or books, but this airport closed and Çukurova International Airport opened in its place.

Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport is a small airport that serves the city of Isparta, which is famously known as the “City of Roses” thanks to its rose production. There are only flights to and from Istanbul (IST).

Finally, both Hatay Airport and Kahramanmaraş Airport are small domestic airports that serve flights to/from Ankara and Istanbul.

Airports in the BLACK SEA REGION

Türkiye’s Black Sea region, known for its lush green landscapes and rugged coastline, is famous for its tea plantations, hazelnut orchards, and charming fishing villages. If you want to explore the Black Sea’s highlands, monasteries, and hearty dishes, consider flying into one of the following airports:

Trabzon Airport (TZX)
Samsun-Çarşamba Airport (SZF)
Ordu Giresun Airport (OGU)
Rize–Artvin Airport (RZV)
Zonguldak Airport (ONQ)
Amasya Merzifon Airport (MZH) *
Kastamonu Airport (KFS) *
Sinop Airport (NOP)  *
Tokat Airport (TJK) *

Trabzon Airport is the most popular airport for flights to the Black Sea Region and the 9th busiest airport in Turkey. The majority of flights (95%!) are domestic routes from Istanbul (IST and SAW), Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, Adana, and Bursa.

Likewise, there are seasonal routes mostly from Middle East countries like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE. This is because the Turkish Black Sea region, particularly Trabzon, has become increasingly popular among Arab tourists, especially those from Gulf countries.

There are many interesting tourist attractions close to Trabzon, including Uzungöl Lake (90 km), Sumela Monastery (50 km), and Cal Cave (45 km).

Trabzon is also a popular choice if you want to visit the neighboring country of Georgia, as Batumi is only a 3.5-hour drive.

Rize—Artvin Airport is a good alternative to Trabzon, especially if you want to see the tea plantations — in fact, 60% of all Turkish tea comes from Rize province!

Moving west, Ordu Giresun Airport serves the cities of Ordu (famous for its hazelnuts and honey), and Giresun (famous for cherries).

Another popular airport in the Black Sea region is Samsun-Çarşamba Airport, which has multiple international flights from Germany and Iraq, as well as domestic flights from Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), Antalya, and Izmir.

Slightly further inland are Tokat Airport and Amasya Merzifon Airport, which are less than 100 km (62 mi) from each other. Both airports serve only domestic flights from Istanbul (IST and SAW) on Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines. If you’re flying into this area, we highly recommend stopping for a day or two to check out the beautiful town of Amasya, which is known for its unique architecture and romantic atmosphere. Check out our Amasya Travel Guide here! →

Finally, we get to the western Black Sea. There are three airports in this region: Sinop Airport, Kastamonu Airport, and Zonguldak Airport. The first two are small regional airports that serve domestic flights, while Zonguldak is an international airport that has flights to Germany.

Of particular interest in this area is Safranbolu (a beautiful town with Ottoman architecture), Kastamonu (a charming local city with a must-visit castle), Sinop (the happiest city in Türkiye!), and Bolu (famous for its thermal springs and lake). Click on the name of the city and you’ll be taken to its respective travel guide. 🙂

Travel Tip: The Black Sea region can be divided into three regions: west – central – east.

If you’re traveling to the western area, your best bet is to fly into Ankara and make your way north to the coast or fly into Zonguldak. Meanwhile, Samsun has the most flights if you’re flying into the central Black Sea region. Finally, Trabzon or Rize are best for exploring the eastern Black Sea.

Airports in the CENTRAL ANATOLIA REGION

Airports in the Central Anatolia Region are vital gateways to the heartland of the country and provide access to places like the capital (Ankara), historical sites (Cappadocia), and other interesting yet lesser-known destinations (Eskişehir and Konya).

Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB)
Eskişehir Hasan Polatkan Airport (AOE)
Konya Airport (KYA)
Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)
Sivas Airport (VAS) *

The busiest airport in the Central Anatolia region is none other than Ankara — after all, it is the capital of Türkiye! Ankara Esenboğa Airport is the 4th busiest airport in Türkiye and serves more than a dozen airlines.

Moving down the list, we have Eskişehir Hasan Polatkan Airport. This is one of the more interesting airports that caught our attention, mainly because there are only flights to/from Brussels… and no domestic flights. Interesting, huh? 😅 If you want to travel to Eskişehir, we recommend taking the high speed train (YHT) from Istanbul.

Next we have Konya Airport, whose city serves as Türkiye’s religious and spiritual center (it’s also famous for having the tomb of Rumi, who founded the whirling dervishes). While the majority of flights are domestic (from Istanbul and Izmir), there are a few seasonal routes from north Europe (Denmark, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands).

If you’re planning to take a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, be sure to pay extra attention in the next paragraph!

Both Kayseri Erkilet Airport and Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport serve the Cappadocia region of Türkiye. However, there’s a slight irony:

🧿 Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is closer to Cappadocia (43 km), but has fewer routes (only 4 routes: two are from IST and SAW, the other two are from Bulgaria).

🧿 Kayseri Erkilet Airport is further from Cappadocia (76 km), but has a lot more routes (domestic from Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, Ercan and international from Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland).

If you have a strict schedule and/or are flying from other Turkish cities, Kayseri Airport is better. If you’re flying from Istanbul and don’t mind fewer options, then go with Nevşehir. Whichever option you choose, we recommend booking your airport transfer ahead of time (we use this one, which operates from both airports!).

Finally, Sivas Nuri Demirag Airport is a regional airport that only has flights to/from Istanbul on AJet, Pegasus Airlines, and Turkish Airlines. If you want to travel to Sivas, it’s also worth looking into the high speed train. The Ankara-Sivas high-speed railway line opened in April 2023 and will take you from Ankara to Sivas in only 2 hours.

Airports in the EASTERN ANATOLIA REGION

It’s no surprise that the region with the largest area (165,436 square kilometers!) also has the largest number of airports. Ironically, the Eastern Anatolia region also has the smallest population of all seven regions (some 6.5 million).

Malatya Erhaç Airport (MLX)
Elazığ Airport (EZS)
Ağrı Airport (AJI) *
Bingöl Airport (BGG) *
Erzurum Airport (ERZ) *
Erzincan Airport (ERC) *
Iğdır Airport (IGD) *
Kars Airport (KSY) *
Muş Airport (MSR) *
Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN) *

There are only two international airports in the Eastern Anatolia region: Malatya Airport and Elazığ Airport.

Malatya Erhaç Airport serves a handful of domestic flights on AJet, Pegasus Airlines, SunExpress, and Turkish Airlines to Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), and Izmir. There are also seasonal routes to Germany (Düsseldorf and Frankfurt).

Elazığ Airport has a very similar list of destinations. It has domestic flights to Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), and Izmir, as well as seasonal routes to Germany (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, and Stuttgart).

In the far east, we have Ağrı Airport, which was named after Mount Ararat (the Turkish translation is Mount Ağrı). The airport is close to its namesake — it’s about a 130 kilometer drive to Mount Ararat (Mount Ağrı) — and only serves flights from Ankara and Istanbul (IST and SAW).

Speaking of Mt Agri … Iğdır Airport is another popular gateway for travelers who want to visit the famous mountain, as it’s only a 95-kilometer drive away. The closest city, Iğdır, is only 45 kilometers (28 mi) from the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, but the border is closed as of 2024. There are talks of reopening the Margara checkpoint, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Bingöl Airport and Muş Airport are fairly close to each other (about 120 km / 75 mi) and are a good choice if you need to get to smaller cities or towns in the region. Both airports only have flights from Ankara and Istanbul (IST and SAW).

Kars Airport is located just 5 km (3 mi) from the city of Kars, which doubles as one of the most popular winter destinations (it’s known as the snowiest city in Turkey!). Likewise, Kars is the terminal station for the famous Eastern Express train journey. We’ve even written about it in our Turkish Winter Bucket List blog post!

Besides looking at the beautiful architecture in the city center, you can also take a trip to the nearby Lake Çıldır (65 km) and Ani Ruins (50 km). Kars Airport serves flights from Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), and Izmir.

If cute cats and beautiful lakes sound interesting to you, then definitely book a flight to Van Ferit Melen Airport. The airport serves flights from Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), Antalya, Izmir, Adana, and Trabzon, and is just a short drive from Van city center. As we mentioned in the intro, Van is famous for its stunning and immense Lake Van (a must-visit!), as well as the famed Van Cat, which are known for their distinct two-tone eyes, white fur, and love of swimming.

Meanwhile, Erzurum Airport is another popular hub for those venturing into the eastern Anatolia region. The airport is located just 20 km (12.4 mi) from Palandöken Ski Resort, one of the top choices for skiers and snowboarders. You can go from the airport to skiing in less than an hour! Erzurum Airport offers flights from Ankara, Bursa, Istanbul (IST and SAW), and Izmir.

Finally, Erzincan Airport serves as an intro to the picturesque Erzincan region, which is renowned for its natural landscapes, lush valleys, pristine rivers, and the Munzur Mountains. The airport serves flights from Ankara and Istanbul (IST and SAW).

Airports in the SOUTHEAST ANATOLIA REGION

Last but not least, we have the southeastern part of Turkey, which is home to the famed Nemrut Dagi (Mt. Nemrut), Gaziantep (known as the gastronomic capital of Turkey), Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, and Mardin. This region is especially known for its extraordinary Middle East architecture, ancient cities, and delicious food.

Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport (GZT)
Diyarbakır Airport (DIY)
Adıyaman Airport (ADF) *
Batman Airport (BAL) *
Hakkari–Yüksekova Airport (YKO) *
Mardin Airport (MQM) *
Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY)*
Şırnak Airport (NKT) *
Siirt Airport (SXZ) *

Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport is the one of two international airports in Southeast Türkiye, and has regular and seasonal flights from Germany, Iraq, Switzerland, and the UK. There are regularly scheduled domestic flights from Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), Antalya, and Izmir.

The airport is only 20 km (12.4 mi) from the city of Gaziantep, which is best known for its amazing cuisine (you’ll find some of the best baklava here!)

Diyarbakır Airport is the other international airport in the region. It serves international flights between Germany (Hannover, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart) and Iraq (Erbil), as well as domestic flights between Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), Bursa, Izmir, and Antalya.

Further west you’ll find Adıyaman Airport, which is mostly used by travelers who want to visit Mount Nemrut. The airport is 70 km (43 mi) from the famous landmark, and only serves flights from Ankara and Istanbul (IST and SAW).

Speaking of famous landmarks, Şanlıurfa GAP Airport is a newer airport that’s used to visit Şanlıurfa (also known as Urfa), a city rich in historical and cultural artifacts. Some of the most popular places around Şanlıurfa include Göbeklitepe (an archaeological site from 9,600 BC), Balıklıgöl (a beautiful pool in the city center), and Harran (famous for its beehive-shaped houses).

Another beautiful ancient city, Mardin, can easily be visited from Mardin Airport. There are daily flights from Ankara, Istanbul (IST and SAW), and Izmir.

The furthest airport in the region is Hakkari–Yüksekova Airport, which is located near the border with Iran and Iraq. The airport only serves two domestic routes: Ankara on AJet and Istanbul (IST) on Turkish Airlines.

Finally, we have Şırnak Airport, Siirt Airport, and Batman Airport. All three airports serve domestic flights from Ankara and Istanbul (IST and SAW).
